Green Cities: Zero-Carbon transition from Lyon to Birmingham

Green Cities: Learning from Lyon

On Monday 28th October, Ellie joined Birmingham City Council and their Route to Zero (R20) taskforce in a fact-finding mission with Birmingham’s sister city Lyon, to look at possible pathways to transition to zero-carbon by 2030.

Working with Civocracy, a NGO based in Germany, the city of Lyon involved citizens to decide which ideas to tackle climate change were most popular. Birmingham City Councillors and the R20 taskforce could discuss the practical application of the Lyon project and how it might be applied to the WMCA.

Ellie said: This is a great opportunity to build links with our sister city Lyon and to learn more from their climate action project. It is clear from their study that people are engaged and interested in climate change policy, and opening up policy discussions to citizens makes the whole process more democratic and more equitable.
