Work Experience Opportunities!

Work placement: opportunity to work with Ellie in the European Parliament available!

Ellie is offering a week-long, fully-funded work experience placement in January to enthusiastic, curious individuals to join her in the European Parliament, shadowing the team on specific topics and getting to grips with the day-to-day life of a MEP office.

Like many political institutions, the EU is not yet fully representative of the diversity of the EU population. Therefore, the purpose of these placements is specifically to promote diversity in the workplace and in political participation, and to encourage young people from underprivileged and underrepresented groups to consider a career in Europe.

You’ll be ready to use this experience to gain an insight into European affairs, to help you advance your career, and to help you contribute to working for social and environmental justice.

There is no language requirement.

Placement in International Development: 20/01/20 – 23/01/20, Brussels

Deadline for applications: Monday 2nd December 10am (CET)

To be eligible for the placement you must:

·         Be over 18 and under 25 at the time of the placement

·         Live in the West Midlands

·         Be available on the specified dates

·         To not have carried out a work experience placement in the EU institutions before

·         Be able to confidently travel alone to Brussels or Strasbourg by train

·         Have the right to travel in the EU. It is your responsibility to check whether this is the case.

To apply, please send a one-page motivation letter to ellie.chowns@europarl.europa.eu outlining your suitability for and interest in a placement. You don’t need to have experience in the topic, but should demonstrate why you are interested in learning more. We are actively seeking candidates who have little or no experience, but who have a genuine commitment to social and environmental justice, and/or who are interested in European politics and policymaking.

Please also give the name, phone number, and email of two referees, and explain how they know you. They can be professional or personal contacts but must be happy to vouch for you.

A stipend will be offered to fully cover travel and living costs for the duration of the placement.

We value equality and diversity, and welcome applications from candidates regardless of sex, race, disability, age, sexual orientation, gender reassignment, religion or belief, marital status, or pregnancy and maternity. In relation to these placements, we particularly welcome applications from BAME candidates as these communities are under-represented within the European institutions.

An informal interview will be arranged via telephone or skype.

A note on unpaid aspect of this work experience:

This is a short term (one week) work experience opportunity. It is an exposure visit, not an internship; the participant is not required to do any work, but will rather be given the opportunity to experience life in the European Parliament and shadow the work of a MEP and her office staff.

It is not appropriate or administratively possible to pay the participant. Instead, all travel, accommodation and food expenses are covered (likely to be approx £500, paid by Ellie out of her own pocket) in order to ensure that the opportunity is open to everyone regardless of background.

Please contact sian.morland@europarl.europa.eu for more information on this regarding GPEW policy around work experience.
